Working with New Haven Police, East Haven officers responded to Laurel Street and Eldred Drive around noon on Monday, Oct. 7, to help track down a reportedly stolen red Hyundai.
East Haven Detective Jon Trinh spotted the car circling the Millbrook Plaza parking lot on Foxon Road, authorities said. But when police tried to pull over the Hyundai, the driver floored it, authorities said.
Police from New Haven and East Haven gave chase as the car ran stop signs and stop lights and drove the wrong way on one-way streets, authorities said.
An East Haven officer ended the chase by using his cruiser to "disable" their car. The kids jumped out and ran, but police quickly caught them, officials said.
Each of them was charged with stealing a motor vehicle and interfering with an officer, East Haven police said.
The kids were released to their guardians with a summon to appear in juvenile court. One boy was taken to an area hospital for treatment after a New Haven officer used pepper spray during his arrest, police said.
Because of their age, authorities cannot release their names or the dash cam video of the chase, East Haven police said.
The case remains under investigation.
